well for starters if you do not kno how to blow a short read you wont like and but once you learn how to use one you will just have to try them all till you find one that fits you. you can get some really nice calls on here in the clasified part some times but if you are new to short reeds dont go spend a hole lot just go by something like a buck gardner working man or grey ghost or some other brand of call but like a said before you can get a really nice call from this web site

Best thing i can tell ya is purchase this DVD "BAD GRAMMER"
this will help you alot !!! In the mean there is many calls that are under 100 that will help you learn on then when you are comfortable calling on a short reed go spend the money on a good one. Just my .02 hope this helps

Heres the site for BG
http://www.midwestwaterfowloutfitters.c ... -threinen/

I bought a Sean Mann shorty express for my first short reed. I learned very quick how to blow it, It is a simple call that takes not much effort. I had a little trouble getting the low notes so I called Sean Mann headquarters and talk to a guy (very nice and helpful) he told me to send it in and he tuned it for so I could hit the lower notes as a beginner acutely replaced the call because the paint got banged up in the mail but for $65 it was a great call and I would strongly recommend it.

If possible go to a store and try as many as you can.Every call is not for every caller and what I think is the best call may not be for you ( as you already stated you did not like the meatgrinder). The other Foiles call you could try is the Coles Carnage Collector, also a short reed call and very easy to use.Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I know of one  I actually make it and designed it for beginners. The design has a lot of built in back pressure that makes the call easier to break over and it has Victorian Honker guts in it which require VERY little air to use. Each one is hand made, not just thrown into a machine that turns them for the people. Nothing wrong with CNC'd calls, I own and use many of them, but for $100 you can have a one of a kind wood call that is made exactly for you.

Where's Dandy Don when you need him??? :(

In that price range for a beginner, I'd be lookin at a GK Giant Slayer or a delrin Lynch Mob - something like a delrin Goose Noose.

Yup - my mistake...Mallard Slayer sounds great, but geese don'T care for it.

There is a Cabelas in Hammond, In which is less than an hour away. Make a trip up there one of these days and try out the calls there. You can pick them up, you can feel them, you can use them. They don't have all the calls, but they hav enough that you can get a good idea of what they are like. They should have just about ever call they list in their catalogs. Every one here wil agree that you need to try them before you buy them.

Haha o no!! I am fairly new to this site dont tell me dandy don has made his impact on this site as well? His partner in crime was remove from ****************** and the fuge and Done Dean has now made an absolute fool of himself on the refuge. Hence the new term youve been deaned!!

As far as the call goes. IMO dont listen to anyone. Find a $50 or $60 short reed and go to work with that DVD, but not just that one DVD get a few, Shawn Stahl has a good one out as well. All will help you in a different way. Once you get your basics down then go blow some customs or Grounds and you will find out what you like best.

yea it takes little air and there is quite a bit of back pressure built in. i love my sean mann shorty express. as a beginner i was calling in geese like crazy. even pulling birds out of a big flock. and all i did was bought the call and went on youtube and looked up how to use a goose call and it tought me everything.
